Any consumer product that can create health or environmental hazards if used, stored or disposed of improperly is considered a Household Hazardous Waste. Items that are commonly found around the home, such as cleaners, solvents and pesticides can potentially pollute groundwater or harm people and pets. These products are often safe to use when used correctly, but require special care when being disposed of.
Paying careful attention to product warning labels can easily identify most Household Hazardous Wastes. Always keep products containing hazardous materials in their original containers and never remove product labels. Repackage and clearly label any corroding containers, but never store hazardous products in food containers. Many Household Hazardous wastes are reactive and should never be mixed. Incompatibilities may react, causing the products to ignite or explode. In addition, contaminated products may become unrecyclable.
We should do everything that we can to "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" our Home Hazardous Wastes. By buying only the amount that we need to do the job we cut down the amount of a product that we need to get rid of. Then, any leftovers that we do not need can be given to a neighbor or relative who does. Lastly, hazardous wastes should be recycled at local drop-off centers. Check with your local authorities to see what permanent facilities, special collection events and local business collection sites are in place in your area.
